Which Water Heater Is Best for Your Home?

Andrew Kyle • May 21, 2018

No matter what time of the year it is, there is one home comfort system in your household that you rely on daily, even if you don’t think about it that much. This is your water heater. You depend on it to provide you with enough hot water each and every day for cooking, cleaning, bathing, and more. So, what if yours has begun to fail and you’ve discovered that you need a  new  water heater?

Then, it’s time to call a professional  plumber in Missouri City, TX. We’ll help you decide whether your water heater can get by with a repair or if it really is, in fact, time to replace your system. If it’s the latter, then we’ll help you decide  which  water heater to get. We install both electric and gas water heaters, but that’s not the only choice you have when deciding on a water heater. You’ll need to determine if you want a traditional storage tank water heater, or if a tankless system will be more useful for your household.

A Look at Energy Savings

There are benefits to both tank water heaters and their tankless counterparts, and which is better for you really depends on the specific needs of your household, and your budget. For instance, the upfront installation of a tankless water heater is going to cost more than a standard storage tank system.  However,  tankless water heaters have the potential to save you substantial amounts of money over their lifetime, ultimately paying you back the high initial cost.

The reason for this is because tankless systems don’t have to continually heat a container of hot water to keep it at the right temperature for use. Rather, heating coils (whether gas or electric) heat the water whenever there is demand from a tap or appliance within the home.

This means that a tankless water heater only runs a fraction of the amount that a storage tank system does which results in significant savings. Since tankless water heaters last longer on average than the storage tank system, they offer you more time to rake in the savings.

The Limits of Tankless Systems

One advantage you’ll hear about in regards to tankless systems is their ability to provide “unlimited” hot water. Meaning, you won’t run out of hot water like you’re at risk of with a storage tank system. While this is partly true, tankless systems  do  have their limits.

Tankless water heaters provide a flow of approximately 3.5 gallons of hot water per minute. But if a greater gallon demand is placed on the system (such as when more than one appliance is running at a time) then the system can be overwhelmed, which will result in a drop in efficiency.

Therefore, tankless systems are best in homes that don’t often have multiple taps running at once, like homes with small families. But that being said, it is easy for us to install more than one tankless water heater for larger homes to make up for the difference, should you decide to go the tankless route.
