Is your home ready for freezing temperatures?

When the temperature drops below freezing there’s always the potential for your water lines to freeze. If this happens the pipes could burst and you could possibly be faced with having to remove the water, which could reach hundreds of gallons, on top of plumbing repair cost. Check out our freeze warning checklist below to help you prepare before the freeze!

Tips to help reduce costly damages
1. Wrap all exposed faucets and pipes, including hose bibbs and all other pipes outside the home or in unheated attic space, garages, etc. with pipe insulation.
2. Disconnect outdoor hoses, drain them and store in a protected area.
3. If your irrigation system has a backflow preventer insulate and waterproof the device.
4. Run hot water in house until all pipes are warm (5-7 minutes). Repeat as necessary.
5. Leave cabinet doors open that contain pipes that are located on outside walls of home. This will allow the room heat to keep the pipes warmer.

If your pipes do freeze
1. Turn off the water at the main shut-off valve so that you don’t have problem as the ice melts.
2. Leave the faucets on the relieve pressure as the ice melts.
3. Use a blow dryer or heat gun to thaw frozen pipes.
4. Don’t ever use a blow torch to unfreeze pipes, it is to dangerous!
